Remembrance Day 2016

Remembrance Day was a remarkable experience at Guiding Light Academy. On November 11th 2016, the students at Guiding Light Academy participated in the annual Streetsville Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony at the Village Square. Students were able to take part in two minutes of silence to remember the veterans who sacrificed their lives during conflicts and to honour those who are graciously still fighting today. Two of our students were fortunate enough to place a Remembrance Day wreath at the foot of the Streetsville Cenotaph. It was a pleasure being able to greet veterans, serviceman, and the former Mississauga mayor, Hazel McCallion. The students also had the chance to meet with a veteran named Sergeant Tom. He shared many interesting stories with the students about his experience in war. He later kindly answered many questions for the students. To give back, the students recited Remembrance Day poems to Sargeant Tom that were studied. This included a poem written by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae titled “In Flanders Field”. The students at Guiding Light Academy enjoyed Remembrance Day and look forward to many more events to come.
